FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ

A tintype is a 19th-century photographic process that produces a one-of-a-kind image on metal or glass. Each plate is coated, sensitized, exposed, and developed by hand while still wet. The finished plate you receive is the original photograph.

How long does a tintype session take?

Private sessions typically allow 45–90 minutes depending on the number of plates created.

Pop-up events operate in 30-minute blocks with two subject slots per block.

After development, plates must dry and be varnished before they are fully finished.

What sizes are available?

Private sessions offer 4×5, 5×7, and 8×10 plates on metal or glass.

Reclaimed automotive metal plates are available in 4×5 and 5×7 sizes.

Pop-up events typically offer 4×5, 5×7, and 8×10 plates depending on event setup.

What should I wear?

Simple, solid colors tend to photograph beautifully in tintype. Mid-tones work especially well. Avoid large logos, bright neon colors, or highly reflective materials. Some folks like to dress in late 1800’s attire to fit the wet plate collodion time period.

If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out before your session.

Can multiple people be in one plate?

Yes. A single plate may include multiple people.

At pop-up events, a group counts as one subject slot. If you would like individual plates in addition to a group portrait, you may reserve both slots within the same 30-minute block. Additional charges will apply if plates are requested for multiple individuals.

Do I receive a digital copy?

Yes. Each finished plate includes one high-resolution archival scan delivered through a private online gallery.

One digital scan is included per plate (not per person). Digital files are retained for 12 months.

Do you require a deposit?

For private sessions and reserved pop-up time slots, yes.

Private sessions require a 50% deposit to reserve your appointment.

Reserved pop-up time slots require a 25% deposit. Walk-up sessions do not require a deposit and are first-come, first-served.

How do pop-up reservations work?

Pop-up events operate in 30-minute blocks with two subject slots per block.

You may reserve one slot for a single plate or group portrait. If you would like multiple plates, you may reserve both slots within the same time block.

Walk-ups are welcome based on availability.

Where are you located?

I am based in Central Ohio and regularly work in Delaware, Columbus, and surrounding communities. Pop-up event locations are listed on the Events page and announced on Instagram.

Can I bring pets?

Pop-up events do not allow pets unless the hosting venue explicitly permits them.

For private sessions, pets may be accommodated with advance discussion. Keep in mind that wet plate photography often requires longer exposure times. If subjects as unable to hold still for several second, their image may come out blurry.

What happens if the plate doesn’t work?

Wet plate photography is a handcrafted process. Subtle variations are part of its character.

If a plate is unsuccessful due to a technical fault, it will be remade at no additional charge.

Occasionally, an imperfect plate may still hold artistic character. In those cases, clients may choose to purchase it at 50% of the listed price.

How long do I need to wait for my finished plate?

Plates are developed immediately after exposure. Once developed, they must dry completely before being sealed with protective varnish.

Guests may choose to wait (typically 1–2 hours) and take their finished plate home the same day, or plates may be carefully packaged and mailed within several days.

How long do you retain digital files?

Digital archival scans are retained for 12 months. Clients are encouraged to download and safely store their files upon delivery.
