Authentic Wet Plate Tintype Photography Columbus Ohio
Handcrafted heirloom photography made on aluminum plates using a 19th-century process.
Wet plate collodion tintype photography is a handcrafted 19th-century process that creates one-of-a-kind portraits on metal or glass. Each plate is coated, exposed, and developed by hand while still wet, producing an image that cannot be replicated digitally.
What Is Tintype Photography?

Tintype photography is a 19th-century process created using wet plate collodion. A thin metal plate is coated with a light-sensitive solution, exposed in camera while still wet, and developed immediately on site. The result is a direct positive image on metal — not a digital print, and not a reproduction.
A closely related variation of wet plate collodion photography, called an ambrotype, uses glass instead of metal. The glass plate is backed to appear dark, allowing the image to display as a luminous positive with a slightly different character and depth. This is offered as well, please reach out if you’re interested.
Because each plate is handcrafted from start to finish, every piece carries subtle variations in tone and texture. No two are ever identical. The process is slower and more deliberate than modern photography, which is part of what gives tintypes their depth, presence, and permanence.
What Should I Expect During a Tintype Session?
Tintype sessions move at a slower, more deliberate pace than modern photography. Each plate is hand-coated, exposed in camera, and developed immediately while still wet. From preparation to final rinse, the photographic portion of the process typically takes 10–15 minutes per plate.
Because wet plate photography is a live chemical process, subtle variations are part of the experience. Tonal shifts, edge artifacts, and organic imperfections are normal and contribute to the character of each portrait.
After development, the plate must fully dry before it can be sealed with a protective varnish. In some cases, clients choose to wait while the plate finishes drying. For others — particularly at events or pop-ups — finished plates can be safely mailed once fully cured.
Most sessions include up to two exposures to ensure a finished plate you are proud to take home. The process is collaborative and intentional, and you will have the opportunity to watch your portrait appear in real time as it develops.

Who Are Tintype Portraits For?
Tintype portraits are for anyone drawn to something physical, historic, and deeply personal. They offer a tangible way to preserve the people and moments that matter most. Couples, families, and individuals seeking a timeless portrait often find that the weight and presence of a metal plate feels different from a digital print.
Tintypes are especially meaningful for those who value craftsmanship and authenticity. Classic car owners and enthusiasts often appreciate the way a historic photographic process complements vintage machines, creating portraits that feel cohesive and intentional. Sessions are available both by private appointment and through select pop-up events at local venues, festivals, and car gatherings — making the experience accessible while remaining intentional and handcrafted.
Each plate becomes a one-of-a-kind artifact meant to last.
For automotive enthusiasts, tintype portraits are also available on reclaimed vintage automotive metal — a signature offering that merges historic process with automotive culture.
